Some time ago, Microsoft released the Windows 10 22H2 update KB5001716, in which the error 0x80070643 has now started appearing. After all, what error is this?

Microsoft Released Windows 10 Update KB5001716 Error 0x80070643 Showed up.

Hello Uwinpc User, Microsoft frequently releases updates for Windows 10 to fix bugs, improve security, and sometimes add new features. Recently, they put out an update called KB5001716. The purpose of this particular update was to help prepare Windows 10 computers for when they get close to the end of their supported life cycle.

Basically, as Windows versions get older, Microsoft wants an easy way to automatically upgrade those devices to a newer version of Windows before official support ends. This KB5001716 update was meant to turn on that upgrade capability for folks still using Windows 10.

Microsoft released Windows 10 Update KB5001716. Error 0x80070643 showed up.
The update was released for all the recent major versions of Windows,10 as 22H2, 21H2, 21H1, and even older ones like 1809. According to Microsoft's notes, there weren't supposed to be any known issues or problems when installing KB50017. If talking about Windows 11 23H2 New Update KB5034848.

However, after the update rolled out, many Windows 10 users started reporting that the installation failed for them with a specific error code: 0x80070643. This error typically shows up with a message saying "There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later." The same types of problems that Microsoft does not understand in Windows 11 like File Explorer

When I tried installing KB5001716 on my own Windows 10 computer, I ran into the exact same 0x80070643 failure error during the update process. Despite the installation seemingly completing properly at first, Windows then immediately tried to install the update again, but this time it failed with that 0x80070643 code.

The really weird part is that on the Windows Update history screen, it showed two identical KB5001716 updates listed - one from March 2024 that was successfully installed, and then another older entry from October 2023 that had failed.

It's almost like after properly updating to the latest March 2024 version of KB5001716, Windows then got confused and tried to install the older October 2023 version on top of it, which of course failed and threw up that 0x80070643 error.

From what I've heard through my sources, Microsoft is aware of reports around this KB5001716 installation issue and the 0x80070643 error popping up. They are currently looking into what's causing Windows Update to get mixed up and attempt a double installation like this.

Now, the error 0x80070643 isn't really causing any major problems - your Windows 10 install and the actual KB5001716 update are fine. It's just a weird hiccup in the update process that's making the error show up unnecessarily.

If you encounter it, you can simply ignore the error message, and it should go away on its own after a while. There are a couple of potential workarounds to dismiss the error right away:

  1. You can use Microsoft's "Show or Hide Updates" troubleshooter tool to actually hide and prevent the old October 2023 version of KB5001716 from trying to install again.
  2. In the Apps & Features section of Windows Settings, you can find the KB5001716 update listed. Uninstalling and then re-installing that through Windows Update seems to clear out the old version and error.
So while not ideal, the 0x80070643 error with KB5001716 isn't the end of the world. It's just a nuisance error caused by some strange conflicting update attempt on Microsoft's end. As long as the latest March update is properly installed initially, your Windows 10 system is up-to-date and working correctly.

Microsoft will likely issue a fix in an upcoming patch to prevent this update re-installation attempt and error from recurring. But in the meantime, they've provided a couple of different ways for users to work around that nagging 0x80070643 error message.

It's just another example of how Windows updates don't always go 100% smoothly, despite Microsoft's best efforts. But overall, KB5001716 is an important update to keep Windows 10 systems updated before hitting end-of-support over the next few years.
